Until November 29, 2024
This exhibition explores Maud’s life, from its beginning up until her move from Atlantic Canada to Ontario and her surprising connection to Kawartha Lakes.
Through Anne of Green Gables and her other published works, generations of people read Maud cross the boundaries of time, age, culture and gender. She gave Anne her love of nature and of Prince Edward Island; her adventurous spirit, vivid imagination, and remarkable ability to focus on the beauty around her, instead of its crudeness. Like Anne, Maud’s life was less than idyllic, yet, she seemingly found happiness in the ‘small things’… her dear friends, her cats, in her writing, in nature…. and in the places that she would visit, one place being Kirkfield.

Inspired by Dr. Christy Woster
This exhibit is inspired by 'L.M. Montgomery and the Railway King of Canada' written by Dr. Christy Woster for the Shining Scroll newsletter for the L.M. Montgomery Literary Society, 2005. Dr. Woster said it best in her article introduction:
As only a true fan of Lucy Maud Montgomery could understand, it is thrilling to walk over the paths that Maud once did, or to sit in a room that she once occupied. A lesser-known destination that Maud visited often is Kirkfield, Ontario. Kirkfield is near Maud's home in Leaskdale and Lindsay, Ontario.
Discover Maud's Recipes
These recipes are from Maud’s original ledger. Treasured and passed
down through her family to Elaine Crawford and her daughter, Kelly,
Maud’s recipes are now compiled in the book called ‘Aunt Maud’s
Recipe Book: from the Kitchen of Lucy Maud Montgomery.’
These recipes allow admirers of Maud to get to know her on
a different level and “step into Lucy Maud Montgomery’s kitchen, to
smell the cakes she baked… sharing recipes between
family and community.”
All recipes are used with permission and happiness from the authors.
