Your starting point on the road to success!

The Starter Company PLUS program will help you start, expand, or purchase an early-stage business (no more than three years old) and connect you to the next generation of local entrepreneurs. With free access to training and mentorship, you will also be eligible for a grant of up to $5,000.

The Starter Company PLUS program runs twice a year. Each cohort has limited space so be sure to apply early!

Program begins November, 13 2024.

Program Outline

The program will help participants complete:

  • A Business Lean Canvas
  • A marketing plan for 1 year
  • Cash flow for 2 years
  • Create company policies and procedures
  • Develop sales techniques
  • One-on-one monthly consultations for first 6 months

Who can apply
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 or older
  • Entrepreneurs prepared to operate a full-time business (35 hours a week)
  • Business under three years in operation and operated in the Kawartha Lakes area
  • Online business owners must reside in Kawartha Lakes
  • Applicants cannot have participated in other government funded entrepreneurship training programs, and/or cannot have received funding from KLSBEC or other SBECs within the past three years
  • Applicants must be available to complete trainings, group sessions, and personal mentoring for six months after the launch of the business
  • Business much be a sole proprietorship/partnership or a corporation where the program applicant holds the majority share
  • Business must operate at arm’s length from family business ventures in Ontario
  • Business must be an independent business venture (not franchised, multi level marketing, single events, distributorship, not-for-profit, or pay-per-click)
  • Applicants must be able to make a contribution to their business in cash or in kind equivalent to 25% of the grant amount (proof required)
  • Business owners must fit the Canada Revenue Agency’s definition of being self-employed in FORM RC 4110
  • Owners must maintain a separate business bank account, following government rules and regulations for operating a business
