Training and Mentoring


The Top 5 Downtown Dreams contestants in each community are required to attend five sessions that have been designed to assist with the creation of a Business Plan and the requirements for the Final Pitch for the Advisory Panel.

All of the Top 5 Downtown Dreams contestants will be automatically registered for the required workshops.

All workshops are open to the public.

The required training dates are as follows:

  • Thursday April 12, 2018, 1-5pm: Getting Started & Marketing (Fenelon Falls Seniors Centre) - This workshop will start off with the Lean Canvas Business model which lays out the ground work for your business plan. The second part of this workshop will cover market research, your potential clients and what types of marketing best suits your business.
  • Thursday April 19, 2018, 1-5pm: Networking & Operations (Coboconk Train Station) - The first part of this workshop will cover some basic tricks and tips to help you network more effectively ; followed by operations management .Operations will cover policies ,procedures and productivity. 
  • Thursday April 26, 2018, 1-5pm: Finance (Lindsay, CKL City Hall, Victoria Room) - This workshop will cover the basics of finance for small business; costing,cash flow and profit margins. There will be a period to ask questions of  one of the business advisors that will be present.
  • Thursday May 3, 2018, 1-5pm: Business Planning Review (Omemee, Coronation Hall) - This is an opportunity to have a business advisor review your plan with you and offer feedback before you hand in your final business plan.
  • Thursday May 31, 2018, 1-5pm: How to Pitch (Omemee, Coronation Hall) - Learn the tools needed to make an effective pitch . This workshop will feature an interactive element.

The optional training dates are as follows:

  • Tuesday April 24, 2018, 6-8pm: Retail Merchandising (Norland Old School House) 
  • Tuesday May 1, 2018, 2-4pm: CKL Resources & Civic Engagement  (Lindsay, CKL City Hall, Victoria Room)
  • Tuesday May 8, 2018, 1-3pm: Human Resources (Fenelon Falls Arena Conference Room)

Locations and times are subject to change, so please check back often and be sure to register for any workshops that interests you, once the registration is open.

All required training is provided by Sandy Greenberg: Sandy provides over 20 years of experience in entrepreneurship reflected in her personal business start-ups as well as coaching, teaching, and leading others to develop successful small businesses. Drawing upon this direct small business and marketing background, she has developed and facilitated courses for Centennial, Humber and George Brown College as well as training workshops for companies such as The Shopping Channel. As a Business Coach she uses the Lean Canvas and Lean Startup method to help her clients develop their start-ups and accelerate growth. Her core strengths are her motivational and assessment skills and her ability to assist people in maximizing their potential while concentrating on their strengths in order to support their strategic vision.


Mentoring is provided by Sandy Greenberg & Bob Minhas, Kawartha Lakes Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre: Mentoring Sessions will be available for the two hours prior to any required training, at the same location as the training. These sessions will be available for Top 5 Contestants only in support of the Downtown Dreams project, and the completion of the Business Plan for the contest submission.
