In Case of Emergency

The Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service works around the clock to respond to medical emergency calls. Although we hope you will not need it, we've compiled some information about what you should do in case of emergency.

Guidelines for reacting to an emergency:

  • Remain calm;
  • Always make sure it is safe for yourself or others to approach the emergency scene;
  • If you are alone, quickly determine the nature of the emergency then call 9-1-1;
  • If someone else is around, send them to call 9-1-1 while you assist the victim;
  • Attempt to provide assistance and comfort to the victim;
  • Attempt to gather pertinent information such as what happened;
  • If possible, send someone to direct the emergency responders to the correct location;
  • At night, consider turning all the house lights on or flashing your outside lights as emergency vehicles begin to arrive.

The 9-1-1 the dispatcher will ask you:

  • the type of emergency
  • what happened
  • how it happened

They will also need to know:

  • your location
  • address or distinctive landmarks in the area
  • name of business or school (if applicable)
  • the entrance emergency responders should use

What should I do if I am alone?

Immediately call 9-1-1 if you are alone and confronted with a true medical emergency. It is important to have help on the way before you attempt to care for the victim. If you have a cordless or cell phone, call 9-1-1 while caring for the victim simultaneously.

How can I prepare for emergencies?

  • Keep your address and phone number posted in a visible place near the phone;
  • Learn CRP and First Aid, you never know when you may need it;
  • Make everyone in the family aware of any medical problems that might come up and keep a list of the person´s medications available for paramedics;
  • In schools or the workplace, keep a sealed envelope with pertinent information easily accessible;
  • Have a fully equipped First Aid kit at home, at the cottage, in your car and at your place of business.
