 Volunteer Activity Support
 

Purpose:

  • To provide an opportunity for the residents to receive additional support during and activities program/outing
  • To provide the volunteer with a learning experience in the area of recreation
  • To provide assistance to the recreation staff in the delivery of programs to residents

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Review specific program plan from program
  2. Assists with set up/ cleanup of the area being used
  3. Accompany designated residents to and from their rooms to the group area as appropriate.
  4. Provide assistance to the resident and staff during the activity
  5. Take direction as appropriate from staff and or other volunteers
  6. Volunteer may bring in own material as provided by the supervisor.
  7. Other related duties as requested by the staff supervisor
  8. Volunteers will adhere to proper diet orders and residents preferences

Time Commitment: Flexible hours as required

Required skills and qualifications:

  • General knowledge and understanding of the needs of the elderly.
  • Good interpersonal skills (friendly ,polite, kind, good listener, patient, helpful)
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Reliable and committed to selected team
  • Ability to follow directions
  • To have respect for the residents and staff
 Palliative Care
 

Purpose: To fill a void in the care of dying residents and their families by "just being there" 

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. To be available day or night to sit with residents
  2. To get necessary information on residents
  3. To respect religion of residents when sitting with them
  4. To sit peaceful with residents
  5. To sing or read with residents

Time Commitment: To be on call and available for any length of stay your schedule would allow 

Required skill and Qualifications:

  • General knowledge and understanding of the needs of the elderly
  • To work together with caregiver and families so resident is not alone
  • To be a sympathetic listener.

Orientation and Training:

A general orientation to the residents beliefs, room and condition will be given by the Volunteer Coordinator on initial phone call or visit.

 Friendly One-to-One Visiting
 

Purpose: To provide an enjoyable activity for residents.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. Provide personal companionship and social interaction with a resident.
  2. Ability to carry on a conversation and encourage participation and feedback.
  3. Be creative with ideas to stimulate interaction.
  4. Maintain a consistent schedule of weekly visits.
  5. Be knowledgeable and practice the fire and safety program.
  6. Report to the Volunteer Coordinator/nursing staff any information that relays to the resident's wellbeing.

Time Commitment:

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • General knowledge and understanding of the needs of the elderly
  • An understanding of the resident's special needs and limitations and areas of interest.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable and committed to selected time.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work with others.

Orientation and Training:

A general orientation to the Home and job will be given by the Volunteer Coordinator or selected staff/volunteer prior to your first shift.

 Outings Volunteer
 

Purpose: To assist the recreation staff with residents while on outings.

Duties and responsibilities:

  1. To follow Victoria Manor policies and procedures for volunteering.
  2. To arrive at least half an hour before the bus is schedules to leave.
  3. Wear volunteer badge.
  4. To help porter residents from their floor to the bus (main lobby).
  5. To help residents load the bud.
  6. To remain with appointed resident(s) at all time.
  7. To assist residents(s) with purchases i.e.) in the store or food.
  8. To inquire if resident(s) has allergies of diet restrictions.
  9. To meet the bus at appointed time with resident(s).
  10. To help return residents to their rooms or home areas.

Time Commitment: Time varies depending on the outing. Volunteers will be given sufficient notice of the time commitment needed.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • General knowledge and understanding of the needs of the elderly
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Good interpersonal skills (friendly, polite, kind, good listener, helpful)
  • Reliable and committed to work selected times

Orientation and Training:

  • A general orientation to Victoria Manor
  • Opportunities to attend staff related in-services will be provided
  • Regular opportunities to meet with other volunteers and to receive additional training from staff
