Kawartha Lakes – Public Works staff have been hard at work cleaning up the debris and aftermath of the storm that passed through Kawartha Lakes on Thursday August 3, 2023.
Staff worked diligently through the night to clear and remove all hazardous trees that were safe to remove. There are a number of trees that require attention by either Hydro One or a qualified arborist. These are being coordinated now.
Hydro One has been working throughout Lindsay to restore hydro to areas of the municipality that lost power due to the storm. Clean up of the downed trees will follow.
As of 12pm on Friday, August 4, Wellington Street in Lindsay remains closed between Cambridge Street and William Street due to a downed tree over the power lines. That section of the road will remain closed until Hydro One removes the tree.
The municipality would like to acknowledge the swift actions taken by our Public Works staff after hours and through the night to ensure that the roads were as safe as possible for residents in the morning.
The municipality is continuing to monitor the situation and encourages residents to use our online Report It form to submit any storm-related issues or service requests directly to our Public Works team.
Residents are also welcome to call our Customer Service team to report any storm-related issues they come across by calling 705-324-9411 during regular business hours or 1-877-885-7337 for any after-hours municipal emergencies.
Residual clean up efforts, such as any necessary street sweeping, brush clean up, etc. will continue into early next week.
Residential leaf and yard waste reminder
Residents are reminded that curbside leaf and yard waste collection occurs twice a year. The next curbside pick up won’t be until the fall. Residents looking to dispose of any leaf and yard waste left behind by the storm are welcome to take their leaf and yard waste to any of our five landfills for free (up to 250kg; anything over will cost $130 per tonne). Accepted waste includes leaves, clippings, pine cones, and tree trimmings up to 7.5 cm (3") in diameter. Be sure to place these materials in paper yard waste bags or in manageable-size bundles.
Rocks, dirt, sod and stumps, trunks or branches larger than 7.5 cm in diameter are not accepted as yard waste and must be disposed of as household garbage at a landfill (fees will apply).
Please keep in mind that the outbound scale at the Lindsay landfill is currently undergoing repairs this weekend. Staff will be directing outbound traffic over the inbound scales as a temporary fix during repairs. As a result, wait times at the Lindsay landfill are expected to be higher than normal for the duration of the repairs. To avoid delays and or long line-ups, we recommend holding off on unnecessary trips to the Lindsay landfill until next week when the inbound scale is operating again.
