Celebrate Earth Week in Kawartha Lakes

Kawartha Lakes – Taking care of the environment, being responsible with resources, reducing our footprint and keeping our lakes and rivers clean are shared values across Kawartha Lakes. Thanks to a coordinated effort by community partners and volunteers, there are many ways to celebrate Earth Week in Kawartha Lakes. Earth Week runs April 21-27 and Earth Day is Monday April 22.

20 Minute Community Clean-Ups
Get together with your neighbours, community group, sports team or family to do a Clean-Up anytime during Earth Week (April 21 to 27). The municipality will provideclear garbage bags and gloves to participants. Groups or individuals planning a 20-Minute Community Clean Up can register online or in person at any Municipal Service Centre. The municipality will consult with each group to determine the best method of garbage disposal. Contact Lee Anna Thornbury, Manager of Customer Service, 705-324-9411 extension 1201.

Learn about the Kawartha Lakes Healthy Environment Plan
Last month, Kawartha Lakes Council adopted a new plan to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions by 30% from the 2005 levels. This amounts to 86,000 tonnes over the next ten years. It will be a community effort involving many areas including agriculture, buildings, energy systems, land use, transportation, water management and waste diversion. The City of Kawartha Lakes as a corporate citizen contributes 1% of our overall emissions and has committed to the new target.

“The vision is that Kawartha Lakes, including government, residents and all stakeholders in our community, will become leaders in addressing our changing climate to ensure a healthy environment and a prosperous community,” shared Pat Warren, Chair, Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee.
