City and residents work together to reduce waste in 2017

Kawartha Lakes – Throughout 2017 the City implemented changes to waste and recycling collection as part of the Integrated Waste Management Strategy, the most notable change being the transition to clear bag waste collection.

“We would like to thank residents and businesses for their efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling,” said David Kerr, Manager of Environmental Services.

Compared with 2016 data, in 2017 there was approximately:

  • 20% less waste collected at the curb
  • 1600 tonnes less waste sent to City landfills
  • 11% more recycling collected at the curb

“As we recycle more we become eligible for more funding from Stewardship Ontario to help our municipality,” explained Mr. Kerr. “Taking advantage of additional funding, reducing waste and extending the lives of our landfills lowers costs and allows us to use tax dollars more efficiently.”

The City received funding of $961,938 from Stewardship Ontario based on the amount of recycling collected in 2016. More funding is expected this year based on the results of the clear bag program achieved in 2017.

In 2018 the City will continue to implement the Integrated Waste Management Strategy and roll out programs that help the community reduce, reuse and recycle. The Integrated Waste Management Strategy can be viewed on the City website or accessed by contacting Waste Management by phone at 705-324-9411 or e-mail at recycle@kawarthalakes.ca.
