Closing a Chapter at Kawartha Lakes Public Library

David Harvey

Kawartha Lakes Public Library CEO and Chief Librarian David Harvie will be leaving in July to take up a position as CEO/ Library Director of the Georgina Public Library.

David came to the City of Kawartha Lakes in 2015, bringing with him years of library experience in Brantford as Manager of Information Technology and Technical Services and Stratford as Systems Librarian and Director.

In his years here, David diligently applied his technical skills to bring the library system into a era of connectivity which has impacted service levels for residents of City of Kawartha Lakes. David oversaw the installment of WiFi internet access at 12 branches and dramatically increased digital resources that now make up a quarter of the library's collection. In addition he implemented new digital services like Freegal (free music downloads) and Flipster (free online access to magazines) and initiated work on a new library website that has a planned launch at the end of July.

During David's tenure, the Library Board undertook a review of how library services are delivered. David carried out the resulting changes including the transition from an 18 branch system to a 14 branch system. Despite the reduced number of branches, both library usage and the numbers of active library card-holders have increased year over year. David has also laid the groundwork for an expansion in Bobcaygeon and the move to a much larger space for the Omemee branch.

"David's had a big impact on our library system," commented Library Board Chair Jamie Morris. "We appreciate all he's done and wish him well as both he and our libraries move on to the next chapter."

The Library CEO works closely with various City of Kawartha Lakes departments. Ron Taylor, CAO, commented, "David will be missed for his dedication to enhancing the services available to our residents through their public library. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours."
