International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Statement from Mayor Andy Letham

Today we are wearing orange to observe that November 25 was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women which kicked off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence across the world.

In solidarity with the United Nations campaign we have lit up City Hall in orange lights and will leave them up for the entire 16 Days of Activism.

It is important to raise awareness about this campaign because it is unacceptable that one in three women will experience some form of sexual assault in their lifetime. It is a problem around the world, and it is a problem right here in our own community.

I would like to take a moment to thank all of the individuals and organizations in our community that provide support and essential services to victims of violence.

The Grandmothers Advocacy Network is planning a candlelight vigil on the steps of City Hall on Friday, December 8 from 6pm to 7pm. Everyone is welcome to join us.
