Kawartha Lakes declares Significant Weather Event due to ongoing freezing rain

Kawartha Lakes – As of March 29, 2025, the City of Kawartha Lakes has declared the ongoing winter freezing rain event a Significant Weather Event, in accordance with Ontario Regulation 239/02 (Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways).

City staff have been working throughout the day to address road conditions across the municipality and will be fully mobilized again tomorrow morning. However, as the storm continues, downed trees are creating access issues in multiple locations, which may prevent us from maintaining the minimum maintenance standards.

Roads are expected to become ice-covered overnight. Operations staff are responding to downed trees where possible, with support from contracted services and arborists from the Parks and Recreation Division to help clear debris and restore access.

Freezing rain is forecasted to continue into Sunday. City crews will continue to monitor the situation and will officially declare the end of the event once service levels return to normal.

We urge residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to stay off the roads wherever possible for your safety and the safety of our crews.
