Kawartha Lakes Drinking Water Systems - Request to Conserve Water

Kawartha Lakes – The municipality would like to remind residents to conserve water, especially during these hot and dry summer months.

Drinking water for the twenty-one drinking water systems in Kawartha Lakes is provided by either surface water (lakes or rivers), or groundwater (underground aquifers.) Both water sources are susceptible to drought/supply shortages during particularly hot or dry weather.

Conversely, the demand for water is highest in the summer when residents and visitors are engaging in outdoor activities such as watering lawns, washing cars and filling swimming pools.

For residents who are supplied drinking water from a municipal system, consideration should be given to the amount of water used. All non-essential activities such as car washing, lawn watering and pool filling (residents should call water haulers to fill pools), should be deferred.

These activities can quickly reduce the amount of water and interrupt our ability to provide all residents with an adequate supply of drinking water.

Residents can also conserve water by checking toilets and faucets for leaks, ensuring water is turned off when not used, taking shorter showers, running the dishwasher and washing machine for full loads only and putting out rain barrels to catch water for gardening or watering.

Every little bit helps and by working together we can ensure that there is enough water available for all residents and visitors.
