Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue encouraging firework safety

Kawartha Lakes –To minimize the risk of fire and burn injuries this Victoria Day weekend, Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescueis reminding residents that fireworks can be extremely dangerous. For this reason, family fireworks or informal neighbourhood displays are not recommended.

A permit is required to sell fireworks and operate a fireworks show within Kawartha Lakes as part of Firework By-Law 2007-236. You do not need a permit to use consumer fireworks. If you choose to have a family fireworks or an informal neighbourhood display: Here are some important safety tips to be followed:

• Only adults who are aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks
• Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging
• Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks
• Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass
• Keep onlookers a safe distance away, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged
• Fireworks are not to be discharged on municipal lands without authorization
• Children should use sparklers under close adult supervision
• Fireworks may not be discharged during a burn ban
