Kawartha Lakes — As Fire Prevention Week approaches, Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service (KLFRS), in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is raising awareness about the importance of having working smoke alarms.
October 6 to 12 is Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!”, emphasizes the critical role smoke alarms play in saving lives.
According to the NFPA, having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half. However, about three out of five fire-related deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or with non-functioning smoke alarms.
“Smoke alarms are your home’s first line of defense in a fire, but they need to be operational,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA vice president of outreach and advocacy. “This year’s campaign highlights simple yet vital steps to ensure your smoke alarms are installed correctly and working properly.”
Fire Prevention Public Educator Katie Dukelow from the KLFRS encourages everyone to support this year's theme,
“A working smoke alarm can give you the precious time needed to escape safely in a fire,” Dukelow said. “Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder to check your alarms and make sure they’re protecting your home and family.”
The KLFRS shares these key smoke alarm safety tips:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on each level of your home, including the basement.
- Ensure smoke alarms are suitable for all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
