Citizen appointments offer an opportunity to volunteer time in various activities associated with local government in an advisory capacity. The committees have a wide range of focus, from agriculture to accessibility.
Susan Blayney, volunteer on the Kawartha Lakes Environmental Advisory Committee (KLEAC), encourages everyone to get involved in the committee that appeals to their interests, regardless of background or education. “My passion is my contribution, not my credentials. I’m very proud of the work that KLEAC has accomplished over the last couple of years.”
Blayney goes on to explain her anticipation of the new pilot project KLEAC has spearheaded. “Starting this spring, Kawartha Lakes Waste Management is planting pollinator-friendly seeds on a decommissioned cell in the Fenelon Landfill site. When a landfill is capped, it needs a vegetative cover to reduce erosion. Instead of planting grass, we will plant vegetation for pollinators on 1.5 acres. We are working with Fleming students to design a protocol to monitor the effectiveness of the planting. This land has been taken out of habitat for many years, and now it is able to give back. This is community involvement at its best, and one of the reasons I’m proud to be a part of the committee.”
