Kawartha Lakes Public Library partners with Pinnguaq to present computer coding workshops
Kawartha Lakes – This summer the Kawartha Lakes Public Library is partnering with Pinnguaq to present several computer coding courses for children and teens. The first session is Tuesday July 10and runs through to Friday August 17.
"We run these courses to share the joy of computers with youth. Computers are all around us and their use are the present and future of the Canadian economy,” says Ryan Oliver, founder of Pinnguaq. “Our ‘te(a)ch’ program aims to turn youth from consumers into creators and ensure youth understand the 'why' of how computers function and think."
All together there will be eight different computer classes offered in July and August at the Lindsay branch, two for ages 5-9 and six for ages 10-15. Parents can sign up children for all the classes in their age group or pick and choose the ones that interest them.
“When Pinnguaq approached the library to offer these classes, we jumped at the chance,” comments Jamie Anderson, Library Director. “We feel this unique opportunity will give kids in our communities a chance to interact and engage with technology in ways that are new to them.”
All of the sessions are free but space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Register by visiting the Lindsay Branch Library Children’s Department or calling 705-324-5632. No computer coding experience is necessary. For more information on the different summer computer coding workshops, please visit the Library’s website.
Pinnguaq was created as a not-for-profit technology start-up in 2012, with the goal of providing play experiences in Indigenous languages. Their mission is to embrace technology as a means of unifying and enabling all people. The ‘te(a)ch’ program focuses on computer science and game development within the Nunavut curriculum. Pinnguaq has an office here in Lindsay, Ontario and wishes to give back to the community by offering technology courses to the public. For more information, please visit Pinnguaq’s website.
