Kawartha Lakes – May is Museum Month, a special time to celebrate how museums help protect and share our history, culture, art, and science. During May, we have a unique opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contributions these institutions make to our understanding of the world around us.
This month includes International Museum Day on May 18, an event organized globally by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). This day highlights how museums encourage cultural conversations, education, and preserving history.
Local museums are important for saving and sharing stories, traditions, and experiences from our communities. They help people feel connected to their heritage and each other.
“Kawartha Lakes is proud to have seven amazing community museums,” said Laura Love, Economic Development Officer – Curatorial Services. “During Museum Month, we want to celebrate their important work in our communities and across Kawartha Lakes.”
Laura Love and Donna Goodwin, Economic Development Officer – Arts and Culture, form the Kawartha Lakes Culture team. They invite everyone to “Explore our Arts and Heritage Trail using the Toureka! App. Our museums are listed there and are open this month!”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of May is Museum Month. To celebrate, Kawartha Lakes is launching the Museums are my Vibe campaign. Visit any Kawartha Lakes museum to get special stickers and postcards.
This month, let's recognize museums for protecting our heritage for future generations. Explore what museums offer, either in-person or online, and support their mission of education, exploration, and connection.
Together, we can honor the museums that enrich our communities and inspire curiosity and learning locally and worldwide.
