New accessible washroom installed at the Janetville Community Centre

Kawartha Lakes – Accessibility continues to be a priority throughout Kawartha Lakes, with the Janetville Community Centre installing a new accessible washroom in April. The project was partially funded through the municipality’s 50/50 Community Project Capital Funding Program.

“We are constantly looking for ways to improve our building for the community we serve,” said Jeff Smith, Centre Chair. “In 2017, the team at the Janetville Community Centre decided that it would be a great advantage for our residents to renovate an existing space into a fully accessible washroom.”

In 2018, Kawartha Lakes awarded the Janetville Community Centre $5000 through the 50/50 Community Capital Project Fund Program. The Janetville Community Centre Volunteer Management Board matched and added money to this grant, and the Centre also received several monetary donations from members of the community. The newly renovated washroom includes accessible washroom fixtures and safety equipment that will help keep persons of all ages safe and comfortable.

“Kawartha Lakes is continuously working towards establishing accessible spaces in all of our buildings,” adds Barb Condie, Accessibility Officer at Kawartha Lakes. “The newly renovated and accessible washroom at the Janetville Community Centre is one great step forward towards a better, more accessible municipality.”

The Janetville Community Centre is a municipal-owned building that is operated by a Volunteer Management Board made up of members of the Janetville community. The Centre is home to many community events in Janetville, including weddings, celebrations of life, birthday parties, fitness classes and more. The Centre also hosts many volunteer-run fundraising events including craft sales, spaghetti dinners and dances.

The Janetville Community Centre would like to thank Janetville Sand and Gravel, community members, the Janetville Community Centre Volunteer Management Board and the municipality of Kawartha Lakes, including Accessibility Officer Barb Condie and the Parks and Recreation department, for making this project possible.
