Storm Update for Kawartha Lakes – April 7, 2025

Min. Dunlop, MPP Scott, Mayor Elmslie at Fenelon Warming Centre

storm recovery banner with tree cuttingKawartha Lakes – The City of Kawartha Lakes Emergency Operations Centre met throughout the weekend and today to assess ongoing storm recovery efforts.

Over the weekend, Mayor Elmslie met with Hon. Jill Dunlop, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response for the Province of Ontario and Laurie Scott, MPP.

Mayor Elmslie commented, “We went to Sturgeon Point, one area with several lines down and extensive tree damage. We also toured the Burnt River area and saw the flooding taking place on many local roads and properties. This annual flood event is unfortunately happening on top of power outages remaining throughout the City. Provincial supports were discussed with the Minister and continued support through Hydro One to ensure every property is restored. I’d like to thank those seasonal residents who refrained from checking their properties over the weekend to ensure safety while Hydro crews gained access. We hope next weekend will be a different story.”Mayor Elmslie with Min. Dunlop at Fenelon Falls warming centre

Key updates:

  • In many critical municipal facilities, power and water have been restored. However, many properties in the northwest and northeast of the municipality are still without power. Pockets of Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls and Lindsay and throughout the remainder of the City are without power. We continue to work directly with our Hydro One contact and are awaiting updates on restoration times.
  • Warming centres across the municipality remained open with a few hundred residents utilizing the centres. All Warming Centres remain open.
  • Parks and Recreation and Library programming resumes today, and all Community Hall bookings are proceeding.
  • A Significant Weather Event remains active as Public Works staff are not able to access all roads and response times may be outside the minimum standards.
  • A State of Emergency remains in place.

It will take some time to work through the municipality, likely several weeks, so please be patient.

We ask that you bring your storm tree and brush debris to the curb. Please don’t block sidewalks, road ways, lines of sight and ditches. Place storm debris in small piles at the edge of the sidewalk or roadside, ensuring the material is not obstructing pedestrian or vehicle traffic. Place cut or broken ends facing out towards the road. Please ensure that the debris is separated from other types of waste or yard materials. Branches larger than 8 inches in diameter and logs will not be picked up. Leaves, twigs and small debris, should be processed according to regular yard waste collection guidelines.

Waste collection: Double collection week of April 7, two extra bags will be collected to assist with spoiled food. Double bags should be used and bags should not weigh more than 40 pounds for collector safety.

Organics: Curbside collection in urban areas Friday. Please remove packaging from food before placing in green bin. Additional organics can be placed in compostable bags in other containers as long as the weight of containers is less than 40lbs. Details
