Storm Update for Kawartha Lakes – evening of April 2, 2025

Kawartha Lakes – The City of Kawartha Lakes Emergency Operations Centre met this afternoon to assess ongoing storm recovery efforts. Please see below for the latest updates on services, openings and closures.

A quote from our Mayor: "Hydro has told us this is the worst storm Ontario has seen since 1998, and the damage is unlike anything they’ve dealt with in years. Crews—along with contractors and support from 18 other utilities—are working around the clock to get power back to the 208,000 customers still without electricity. Since Friday night, they've already restored service to over 783,000 homes and businesses."

"While the recent stretch of good weather has helped, Hydro is now preparing for freezing rain and wind, which could bring down more damaged trees and cause further outages. Access issues and falling debris are still making things difficult in the hardest-hit areas, like many of our rural and norther communities in Kawartha Lakes. They’ve warned us that as cleanup continues, more hidden damage and new outages are likely to be discovered. Our roads operations are working to keep roads open so they can do their work. We need access first, power back on, then cleanup.”

Key Priorities

  • Clearing all roads for Hydro One access
  • Restoration of key municipal infrastructure, including power at water and wastewater facilities, and community centres.
  • Hydro One is targeting to restore power in most urban centres by the end of the week, rural areas could be longer.

Weather forecast: Significant rain mixed with snow and potential freezing rain and wind expected later today into tomorrow. Prepare for potential flooding and take caution as winds may cause further tree damage. Flood safety tips here.
