Accessible Recreation

The City of Kawartha Lakes is committed to providing accessible and inclusive recreation opportunities for participants of all abilities. The Parks and Recreation Division seeks to serve the diverse needs of all residents by offering a range of inclusive services.

All City of Kawartha Lakes Parks and Recreation documents are available in alternate formats upon request. To request an alternate format, email the Parks and Recreation Division or call 705-324-9411 extension 1220.

Aquatic Programs

Learn to swim at any age through Kawartha Swim programming! Private and semi-private lessons are available for participants who require additional support to complete Kawartha Swim programs. To learn more about our aquatic programs, please visit our swim page. 

Pool lifts are designed to hoist swimmers in and out of the pool and are available for use at all our municipal pool locations. The small pool located at the Lindsay Recreation Complex has an accessible ramp entry, and the Forbert Memorial Pool in Bobcaygeon has a stepped ramp entry. Water wheelchairs are also available for patron use at both locations.

Discounts on public swims are available for patrons who receive the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).

Skating

Parks and Recreation is proud to offer an Accessible Skate that is open to skaters with disabilities and their families, caregivers, and/or support workers. Accompanying caregivers or support persons skate free of charge. Wheelchairs, skate aids, sledges, and other mobility devices are welcome. Visit our Online Program Registration website to learn more and register for Accessible Skates.

Wheelchairs are permitted, with the accompaniment of a responsible operator (age 16 or older) wearing ice skates and helmet;

  • Wheelchair wheels must be cleaned of any dirt/debris prior to entering the ice surface. Cleaning materials will be available at the facility.
  • The person accompanying the participant in the wheelchair is not required to register or pay the registration fee.
  • Wheelchair users are asked to use the perimeter of the ice closest to the boards.

Day Camps

Parks and Recreation is proud to offer an Inclusion Support Program. This program is intended to foster accessible and inclusive opportunities for participants of all abilities.

One-on-one inclusion support is available at Summer Day Camps. Alternatively, camp participants are welcome to provide their own external support staff while attending all day camp programs.

Parks

There are several parks and green spaces throughout Kawartha Lakes. The Parks and Recreation Division is committed to fostering an inclusive and safe community by integrating accessible features and enhancements in our indoor and outdoor facilities.

Trails

Kawartha Lakes has an extensive network of trails throughout the municipality.

  • Rotary Trail in Lindsay is a paved 3.2 kilometer route that is accessible for walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and roller blades/skates.
  • The Lindsay Legacy Trail is a 1.6 kilometer section of paved trail along the Victoria Rail Trail, from Victoria Junction to Thunder Bridge Road.
