2025 Emergency Preparedness Week in Kawartha Lakes

Kawartha Lakes – Kawartha Lakes is observing Emergency Preparedness Week from May 4 to May 10, 2025.

Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is a national awareness initiative and an opportunity for Canadians to take action to ensure you're prepared to protect yourself, your family and your community during an emergency.

This year, the theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.

As we all know far too well with the recent ice storm, extended emergency events can come out of nowhere. The best thing you can do to prepare yourself and your family, is to know the risks around you and develop an emergency kit and plan accordingly.

Throughout EP Week, you're encouraged to take steps to enhance your ability to protect yourself and your family in the face of any potential emergency. By implementing straightforward measures, you can reinforce your preparedness for a variety of situations, regardless of when or where they may occur.

Key actions include:

Know the risks: Understanding the specific risks relevant to the Kawartha Lakes community is crucial for effective preparation. Whether it is extreme weather events or power outages, being aware of potential hazards enables better responsiveness. Additionally, readiness for less probable occurrences is equally important. Make a plan: Creating and regularly practicing an emergency plan allows families to respond effectively when faced with an emergency. This includes making and practicing a home escape plan.

Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit: Be ready in the event of an emergency by preparing a 72-hour emergency kit with essential supplies to support you and your family (including pets) for at least three days during any kind of emergency that may occur.

To learn how to develop a plan and build an emergency preparedness kit visit the government of Canada’s Emergency Preparedness Week webpage.
