City Hall to shine blue for National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Kawartha Lakes – On October 17, Kawartha Lakes will proudly participate in the fifth annual “Light It Up! For NDEAM!” campaign. Join us as we illuminate City Hall in blue that evening to promote awareness for disability inclusion in the workplace.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize the importance of equal employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This month, we celebrate the contributions of workers with disabilities and encourage businesses and the community to foster an inclusive workforce.

NDEAM is about more than just awareness; it’s about action. Here’s how residents and businesses can get involved this October:

  • Raise Awareness: Help spotlight the skills and talents of individuals with disabilities, promoting a more equitable work environment.
  • Encourage Inclusive Hiring: If you're an employer, consider reviewing your hiring practices to prioritize diversity and accessibility.
  • Remove Barriers: Advocate for the elimination of physical, technological, and social barriers that hinder workforce participation.
  • Celebrate Contributions: Share stories and recognize the valuable contributions that individuals with disabilities make to our workplaces and communities.
  • Support Disability-Owned Businesses: Consider shopping at or supporting businesses owned by individuals with disabilities, helping to empower them economically.
  • Social Media Advocacy: Use social media to spread the word about NDEAM. Share success stories and important messages using hashtags like #NDEAM, #LightItUpForNDEAM and #EngageTalent.
  • Volunteer: Offer your time to local organizations that support individuals with disabilities. Groups like Community Living Ontario run programs that empower people in various aspects of life, including employment.

We invite everyone in Kawartha Lakes to join us on October 17 and throughout the month to support and celebrate the vital role of individuals with disabilities in our workforce. For more information on National Disability Employment Awareness Month, visit the Ontario Disability Employment Network (ODEN) website.

Together, let’s work together to create a more inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive!
