Study will look at ways to reduce flooding and improve road safety
City launches Thurstonia Drainage Study
Kawartha Lakes – The City of Kawartha Lakes has started the Thurstonia Drainage Study to find ways to improve drainage and reduce flooding in Thurstonia.
Background information
Some areas in Thurstonia experience water buildup and flooding, especially during heavy rain and spring snow melt. In winter, water can freeze on roads and create icy conditions. This study will look at ways to help fix these problems and improve safety for residents.
The study area includes about 49 hectares (approximately 121 acres) of land. It is generally located between Gil Mar Road (west), Thurstonia Road (east), Sturgeon Lake (north), and areas along Pitt’s Cove Road, Birchcliffe Avenue, Silver Birch Street, and Pavillion Road (south).
The study will include:
-
Looking at how water moves through the area today
-
Studying the land, roads, and environment
-
Consulting with Indigenous communities, agencies, and residents
-
Exploring different ways to improve drainage
-
Comparing options and choose the best solution
The City will share the results with Council, along with next steps, which could include designing and building improvements in the future.
Get involved
Community input will play an important role throughout the study. Residents are encouraged to share feedback and stay informed as the project progresses.
There will be Public Information Centres (open houses) where you can learn more and share your ideas. Details will be shared at a later date.
In the meantime, learn more, leave comments, and sign up for updates on the Jump In Kawartha Lakes – Thurstonia Drainage Study page.
