‘Come Together,’ Kawartha Lakes, for Mental Health Week 2026
Kawartha Lakes – The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and the City of Kawartha Lakes are encouraging residents to build stronger social connections during Mental Health Week, May 4 to 10. This year’s theme highlights how connection helps improve mental health at home, at work, and in the community.
Social connection is part of everyday life. It can be as simple as sharing a meal, calling a friend, or saying hello to a neighbour. These small moments matter and can make a big difference in how people feel.
Research shows that strong social connections are linked to better well-being, greater resilience, and even longer life. They also help people feel a sense of purpose, belonging, and safety.
However, not everyone feels connected. According to CMHA, about 13% of Canadians say they feel lonely often or always. Youth and seniors are especially affected, with 17% of youth and 10% of seniors reporting frequent loneliness.
“As an HR professional, I am aware of research related to the benefits of social connection in the workplace,” said Liana Patterson, Chief People Officer at Kawartha Lakes. “I've learned that our relationships at home, work, and in the community impact all dimensions of our well-being, including our mental health.”
Kawartha Lakes is also highlighting the importance of connection in the workplace. Peer support programs, where employees support each other through shared experiences, can help reduce stress and build a stronger sense of belonging. These programs focus on listening, trust, and understanding, not giving advice or solving problems.
Workplace peer support can:
- Build stronger connections among employees
- Create safe spaces for open conversations
- Help people manage stress and life challenges
- Support a more inclusive and healthy work environment
You’re encouraged to take simple steps to connect with others during Mental Health Week, such as:
- Reaching out to a friend or family member
- Joining a local event or community group
- Checking in on a neighbour
- Spending time with others in person when possible
“I feel very fortunate to be a resident in Kawartha Lakes, where we have the benefit of getting to know our neighbours, to chat with the servers in coffee shops and grocery stores,” said Patterson. “Just making a brief connection with another person might brighten their day and yours too.”
