Flag to be raised as Kawartha Lakes marks Autism Acceptance Day
Kawartha Lakes - On April 2, Kawartha Lakes, along with Kawartha Lakes Autism Support, will recognize Autism Acceptance Day with a flag raising ceremony to celebrate the many ways autistic people contribute to our community. The day is a chance to learn, listen, and build respect and understanding for different ways of thinking and experiencing the world.
Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), impacts brain development and is a part of human diversity. Autistic people may communicate, learn, and interact in different ways. Some may be very sensitive to sounds, lights, or textures. Others may have strong interests or unique ways of solving problems.
Autism acceptance means more than being aware of autism. It means including people with autism in everyday life, valuing their strengths, and respecting their needs. It also means understanding that there is no one “right” way to think, speak, or behave.
When communities practice acceptance, they become more welcoming and supportive. Simple actions, like being patient, using clear language, or making space for different communication styles, can help everyone feel included.
“Every person deserves to feel seen and valued, and on Autism Acceptance Day, we are reminded to lead with empathy and create spaces where all residents can thrive,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “By embracing neurodiversity, we strengthen our community and build a municipality where differences are respected, included, and celebrated.”
“Acceptance means removing barriers, not asking people to change who they are, added Christine Briggs, People Partner- Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility at Kawartha Lakes. “Inclusion starts with understanding and support.”
