Kawartha Conservation issues Flood Watch for the Kawartha Lakes Region until March 13, 2026

Based on current watershed conditions, recent rainfall, ongoing snowmelt, and additional precipitation forecast over the next two days, Kawartha Conservation is issuing a Flood Watch for the Kawartha watershed through to 12PM Friday March 13, 2026. The Ministry of Natural Resources - Surface Water Monitoring Centre has also issued a Provincial Flood Watch for Southern Ontario, noting elevated water levels, saturated ground conditions, and continued runoff across the region.

Since last week, the watershed has received significant rainfall combined with sustained above seasonal temperatures that have accelerated snowmelt. This combination has generated substantial runoff. Rivers, streams, and watercourses across the watershed have responded with sharp increases in water levels and flows, with some locations approaching seasonal thresholds.

With additional precipitation expected over the next 48 hours, combined with continued snowmelt, further runoff is anticipated. As identified by the Surface Water Monitoring Centre, high water levels and flows are expected to be sustained, and areas with elevated antecedent moisture conditions remain particularly vulnerable. Any renewed rainfall may result in further rises and a reversal of any short-term stabilization in water levels.

Flooding of low-lying areas, floodplains, and areas adjacent to watercourses is possible. Water pooling may occur on roads and in poorly drained areas. Smaller tributaries and urban drainage systems may respond quickly to rainfall. Elevated flows will increase the risk of erosion and create hazardous conditions near all watercourses.

Ice cover that remains on rivers and lakes will continue to weaken and break up. Movement of ice may result in ice jams in areas with a history of jamming, leading to sudden and unpredictable increases in water levels.

Residents in flood-prone areas should closely monitor local conditions and be prepared to take action if necessary. Kawartha Conservation advises residents to avoid all watercourses during this period and reminds parents and pet owners to keep children and pets away from rivers, streams, and ponds. Water levels and flows will remain dangerous, and riverbanks may be slippery and unstable.

Northern tributaries such as the Burnt River and Gull River are monitored by staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources. Residents along these rivers are requested to direct any questions concerning water levels to the Minden Area Office at 705-286-1521 or refer to current flood messages issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Kawartha Conservation continues to monitor watershed and weather conditions closely and remains in communication with municipal partners, the Trent-Severn Waterway, the Ministry of Natural Resources - Surface Water Monitoring Centre, and neighboring Conservation Authorities.
