Kawartha Conservation - Watershed Conditions Statement - Water Safety - March 30, 2026

WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY
DATE: March 30, 2026
TIME: 11:00am

Message sent on the basis of information received from:

Based on information from Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Ministry of Natural Resources – Surface Water Monitoring Center, Kawartha Conservation is issuing a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety, effective to April 2, 2026.

Current forecasts for the Kawartha Conservation Watershed indicate a significant rainfall event beginning early Tuesday morning through to end of day, with 20–30 mm expected across the region. This rainfall, combined with the melting of any remaining snow within the watershed, will result in increased water levels and flows in local streams, rivers, and lakes. In northern areas of the watershed where a more significant snowpack remains, enhanced snowmelt is also expected and will contribute to rising water levels downstream in our lakes.

Flooding is not anticipated at this time; however, these above-normal weather conditions can result in hazardous conditions near all watercourses. Increased water levels and flows will result in unstable and slippery stream banks and can increase the risk of erosion.

Residents are advised to exercise caution near all watercourses. Parents and pet owners are reminded to keep children and pets away from fast moving water and unstable banks. Recreational users should avoid waterways until conditions further stabilize.

Northern tributaries, such as the Burnt River and Gull River are monitored by staff from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). Residents along these two rivers are requested to direct any questions concerning water levels to the Minden Area office at 705-286-1521 or refer to the messages issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Kawartha Conservation will continue to monitor watershed and weather conditions closely and remains in communication with municipal partners, the Trent-Severn Waterway, the Ministry of Natural Resources - Surface Water Monitoring Centre, and neighboring Conservation Authorities.

Updates will be provided by Kawartha Conservation as conditions warrant.

If you are aware of or have concerns related to flooding or hazardous conditions, please contact Kawartha Conservation at 705.328.2271 or 705.344.0155 after hours.

This Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety will remain in effect until April 2, 2025, or be updated as required.

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety is a general notice that existing or potential conditions pose a risk to personal safety.  Watershed Conditions Statements - Water Safety may be issued when streams are flowing at or near bank full levels, when ice conditions are unsafe, or when stream banks are icy, soft and/or slippery.
