What is an affordable housing unit?
Affordable housing units have rental rates that are at or below the average market rent for the area. This program is separate from community housing, where rent is based on household income.
How do I apply for an affordable housing unit?
To qualify, applicants must meet several requirements, including:
- At least one household member must be 16 years of age or older
- Household income must be between $44,500 and $66,500
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or approved refugee claimants
- No one on the application can own a home
- Applicants must be able to live on their own or have support services in place
- Any money owed to a housing provider for rent or damage must be paid, or a repayment plan must be in place
A complete application must include:
- A completed affordable housing application
- A Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment for the most recent tax year for each household member who is 18 or older
- Proof of Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status or an approved refugee claim
Only residents with completed applications will be added to the waiting list.
Wait times depend on the type of unit needed and what is available. The City manages the waiting list but is not the landlord. Housing providers review applications and choose tenants. They may complete credit checks, contact past landlords and meet with applicants.
Applicants must update their information every year to stay on the waiting list. You should also contact Housing Services right away if your phone number, address, income, or household information changes.
