Kawartha Lakes acknowledges National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ People
Kawartha Lakes – Today, Kawartha Lakes acknowledges the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S), also known as Red Dress Day. This day is recognized on May 5. It is a time to remember and honour the Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people who have been taken from their families and communities.
The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people is a serious problem in Canada. Many families and communities have suffered great loss and continue to seek justice.
It is important that we take time to remember those who are missing or have been murdered. We stand in support of their families and communities, and are committed to working towards a future where everyone is safe.
Kawartha Lakes encourages everyone to take time today to learn more about MMIWG2S and show support. Some ways to do this include:
- Wearing red.
- Learning about the history of this issue.
- Supporting local organizations that work to end violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people.
We recognize the ongoing pain and trauma experienced by Indigenous families and communities. Kawartha Lakes is committed to working towards reconciliation and creating a safer community for everyone.
About Red Dress Day
Red Dress Day began because of an art project by Jaime Black, a Métis artist. She hung empty red dresses to represent the missing and murdered women. The red dresses have become a symbol of this important day.
