Kawartha Lakes launches Agriculture and Food Action Plan survey, celebrates International Year of the Woman Farmer

Kawartha Lakes - Kawartha Lakes invites farmers, agri-businesses, food sector partners, and community members to help shape the future of local agriculture through a new Agriculture and Food Action Plan survey.

The Agriculture and Food Action Plan will guide economic development priorities, investment, and initiatives that support farming, food production, processing, and distribution across Kawartha Lakes. Input from people working in and connected to the sector is critical to ensuring the plan reflects local realities and opportunities.

“This action plan is about listening to our community and building a strong, resilient agriculture and food sector for the future,” said Kelly Maloney, Economic Development Officer – Agriculture. “The survey is an important tool to gather insight from across the entire value chain.”

The launch of the survey aligns with the start of the International Year of the Woman Farmer, a global initiative recognizing the essential role women play in agriculture and food systems. Kawartha Lakes is home to 505 female farm operators, whose leadership, innovation, and stewardship are central to the success of the local agricultural economy. Woman farmers now make up 31.4% of farm operators in Kawartha Lakes.

As part of the survey launch, Kawartha Lakes is encouraging woman farmers to ensure their perspectives are reflected in the plan.

Make sure your voice is herd

Woman farmers are specifically invited to share their experiences, priorities, and ideas to help guide future agriculture and food development efforts in Kawartha Lakes.

The survey is open to:

  • Agri-businesses and service providers
  • Food processors and distributors
  • Agricultural transporters and suppliers
  • Food entrepreneurs
