Kawartha Lakes marks International Overdose Awareness Day
Kawartha Lakes – On August 31, Kawartha Lakes will join communities around the world in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day. This global day of action brings people together to help end overdoses, reduce stigma, and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends who have lost loved ones.

International Overdose Awareness Day is an opportunity to reflect, remember, and take action. The goal is to raise awareness about the risks of drug use, show support for those who struggle with substance use, and remind residents that help is available.
A flag-raising ceremony will be held at City Hall in Lindsay on Friday, August 29 at 1pm to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. The flag will remain flying until September 2.
“Every life lost to overdose is one too many,” shared Mayor Doug Elmslie. “By coming together, we can reduce stigma, provide support, and save lives. We encourage everyone to learn the signs of overdose and where to find local resources.”
Local agencies and health partners continue to provide education and resources to prevent overdoses and to support recovery. Naloxone kits are available free of charge at local pharmacies and through the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit. Naloxone is a safe medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose and save a life.
Residents are encouraged to take part by:
- Learning about the signs of overdose and how to respond
- Carrying a naloxone kit
- Talking openly and without judgment about substance use
- Remembering and honouring those lost to overdose

Together, we can build a community that is informed, compassionate, and ready to act.
