Kawartha Lakes names osprey as Official Bird
In April 2024, an online poll saw over 500 participants vote for the 2024 Bird of the Year, with the Osprey soaring ahead as the clear winner. Runners-up for the Bird of the Year were the Black-capped Chickadee and Northern Cardinal.
Known as “Ontario’s fishing hawk,” the Osprey is a frequent sight along Kawartha Lakes’ waterways, with nests visible on trees and hydro poles. In recent years, Kawartha Lakes’ conservation efforts have helped Osprey populations rebound from dangerously low numbers.
“The Osprey is symbolizes the natural beauty and biodiversity of our region,” said Thom Luloff, Professor of Conservation Biology at Fleming College and BFKL member. “Its presence near our lakes and rivers underscores the importance of clean waterways and thriving ecosystems.”
Following the Osprey’s win and with its central role in the municipality’s branding, the Environmental Advisory Committee recommended it be formally adopted by Council as the Official Bird. Council passed this motion on September 12, 2024.
To celebrate, Kawartha Lakes will host a Bird Friendly Day in Spring 2025, featuring birdwatching tours and educational activities. For more information, visit the Bird Friendly City page or contact Jaimie Morris, Chair, Bird Friendly Kawartha Lakes (jamie1804@gmail.com).
