Kawartha Lakes observes National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Kawartha Lakes – Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is December 6, 2024. On this day, Kawartha Lakes stands united to remember the lives lost and to renew its commitment to ending gender-based violence within our community.
December 6 marks a day of reflection and action, commemorating the 14 young women tragically lost during the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre. This somber anniversary serves as a stark reminder of the persisting challenges faced by women and girls in our society and the urgent need to work together to eradicate violence in all its forms.
Mayor Elmslie expressed the municipality's commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment, stating, "We stand united with communities across the country in remembering the 14 young women taken during the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre and those whose lives have been lost since. The City of Kawartha Lakes condemns violence in all forms and is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive space for all."
To honor the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, the National Flag at City Hall will be half-masted on December 6. Residents are encouraged to attend the vigil hosted by Women’s Resources, engage in discussions, and support initiatives aimed at raising awareness and preventing violence against women.
Kawartha Lakes invites everyone—individuals, families, and organizations—to stand together in solidarity and work toward eradicating gender-based violence in all its forms. For those seeking support or ways to contribute, Women’s Resources of Kawartha Lakes offers programs, services, and volunteer opportunities aimed at supporting survivors and fostering community awareness.
