Kawartha Lakes recognized in Call2Recycle’s 2025 Leaders in Sustainability Awards
Kawartha Lakes – Kawartha Lakes has been chosen as one of the recipients of the 2025 Leaders in Sustainability Awards from Call2Recycle Canada, the country’s leading battery collection and recycling organization. The Leaders in Sustainability Awards recognize organizations that show strong environmental leadership by responsibly collecting and recycling used batteries and supporting Canada’s circular economy.
In 2025, Kawartha Lakes shipped 32 drums of batteries, totaling 7,459 kilograms (about the weight of five cars), from its two hazardous waste depots in Lindsay and Fenelon Falls. This total reflects batteries collected at the depots only and does not include curbside battery collection, which will be included in future totals. This strong collection performance shows Kawartha Lakes’ proactive approach to battery recycling and its continued commitment to responsible environmental practices.
As a 2025 award recipient, Kawartha Lakes joins a diverse group of partners, including retailers, municipalities, waste and recycling operators, and businesses across Canada working to reduce waste and strengthen environmental leadership.
“2025 was a milestone year for the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, driven largely by the continued leadership and collaboration of partners across the country,” said Joe Zenobio, President and CEO of Call2Recycle Canada. “Organizations like Kawartha Lakes play a critical role in strengthening Canada’s battery recycling system. We are pleased to recognize their commitment to sustainability and their efforts to advance Canada’s circular economy.”
“We are continuously working to improve waste diversion and make it easier for residents to recycle materials safely,” said Heather Dzurko, Manager of Waste Management for Kawartha Lakes. “Programs like battery recycling help keep hazardous materials out of landfills and protect our environment.”
Since 1997, Call2Recycle Canada has diverted more than 55 million kilograms of batteries from Canadian landfills. For more information about the 2025 Leaders in Sustainability Awards, visit call2recycle.ca.
