Kawartha Lakes recognizes Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day
Kawartha Lakes – On January 26, 2026, Kawartha Lakes recognizes Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day to help raise awareness about a rare but serious illness that mainly affects young children.
Kawasaki disease is a condition that causes inflammation in blood vessels throughout the body. It most often affects children under the age of five. If not treated early, it can lead to heart disease. Without treatment, 25% of children with Kawasaki disease will develop coronary artery abnormalities.
There is no single test for Kawasaki disease, which can make it hard to diagnose. Knowing the signs and acting quickly can make a big difference.
Common symptoms may include:
- A high fever lasting five days or more
- Red, bloodshot eyes
- Red cracked lips and red swollen tongue (“strawberry tongue”)
- Swollen hands or feet
- Rash
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Redness in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
Parents and caregivers who notice these symptoms should seek medical care right away.
By recognizing Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day, Kawartha Lakes is helping to spread information and support families who may be affected.
“Kawasaki disease can be frightening for families, especially because it often affects very young children,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “By raising awareness, we can help parents recognize the symptoms early and encourage them to seek care. Awareness can save lives.”
Residents are encouraged to learn more about Kawasaki disease and share reliable information within their communities. Early treatment can greatly reduce the risk of long-term heart complications.
For more information, residents can speak with a healthcare provider or visit the Kawasaki Disease Canada website.
