May 14 is Apraxia Awareness Day

Kawartha Lakes – May 14 is Apraxia Awareness Day, a time to raise awareness and understanding of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), a rare motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to plan and produce the movements needed for speech. Childhood apraxia affects one in one thousand children.

Children with apraxia know what they want to say, but their brains struggle to coordinate the muscle movements necessary to say the words. With early diagnosis and intensive speech therapy, many children can make significant progress.

Apraxia Awareness Day highlights the challenges faced by children with apraxia and their families, while also celebrating the strength, resilience, and hard work of those learning to find their voice.

“Apraxia Awareness Day reminds us of the incredible determination of children with apraxia and the importance of early support,” said Mayor Elmslie. “Together, we can help break down barriers and give every child the chance to communicate with confidence.”

Residents are encouraged to wear blue on May 14 and share messages of support to help spread awareness and understanding in our community. On May 14, the lights at City Hall in Lindsay will be blue in support of Apraxia Awareness Day.
