Nominate Your Adopted Pet for Kawartha Lakes’ Pet Mayor

It starts with a wagging tail. Or a cautious purr. Or a pair of unsure eyes in need of a second chance.

Every adopted pet has a story. One that begins with hope and grows into companionship, loyalty and love. Now, those stories are taking centre stage.

The City of Kawartha Lakes Wellness Warriors are partnering with the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes to launch the first-ever Pet Mayor of Kawartha Lakes campaign, and community members are invited to nominate their adopted pets for the title.

Do you have an adopted dog from the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes who now rules your living room? A once-shy cat who has grown into a confident companion? A small but mighty adopted pet with an outsized personality?

If your pet was adopted from the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes, they are eligible to run for Pet Mayor.

How to Nominate your Pet:

Eligible candidates must be pets adopted from the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes.

To nominate your adopted pet, please complete the Pet Mayor Nomination Form by Friday, March 27 at 4:30pm.

You’ll be asked to share your pet’s adoption story; from their first day home to the companion they are today; along with insights into their personality and a photo to accompany their submission.

This campaign is a fundraising and awareness initiative in support of the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes and helps highlight the importance and impact of pet adoption in our community.

From Nomination to Mayor: How It Works

Nominations open Friday, March 6 to Friday, March 27 at 4:30pm.

Community members are invited to nominate their adopted pets during the nomination period. 

Once submissions close, all entries will be reviewed, and the top ten nominees will be selected by the Kawartha Lakes Wellness Warriors. The top ten nominees will then be forwarded to the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes to move forward as official finalists.

Official Voting will take place April 1 – April 30

Beginning April 1, all finalists will be featured on the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes website, where official voting will take place.

To cast a vote, a $5 donation to the Humane Society is required. All proceeds from the campaign will go directly to support pets in need at the local Humane Society.

Voting closes on April 29, and the winner will be announced on April 30. One deserving pet will earn the honorary title of Pet Mayor of Kawartha Lakes.

Behind every nomination is a story of second chances and the impact adoption makes: not just on pets, but on the people who welcome them home. We look forward to meeting the candidates.
