Remembrance Day commemorations in Kawartha Lakes
Kawartha Lakes – Residents are invited to take part in local Remembrance Day services taking place throughout Kawartha Lakes. Communities will gather to honour the sacrifices of Canadian veterans and active service members, and to reflect on the importance of peace, freedom, and remembrance.
“On Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who fought to protect the freedoms we cherish today,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “Their legacy lives on in our community’s commitment to peace, gratitude, and remembering those who gave so much for all of us.”
Commemorative ceremonies being held on Tuesday, November 11 include:
Coboconk: Coboconk Legion at 11am.
Lindsay: A parade will depart from the Lindsay Legion at 12 York Street North at 10am, and proceed to the Cenotaph at 190 Kent Street West. A service will follow immediately after the parade’s arrival.
Oakwood: Oakwood Lions/Mariposa Hall at 11am.
Omemee: Omemee Legion at 11am.
On November 8, Canadians also observed Indigenous Veterans Day. This day recognizes the important contributions First Nations, Inuit, and Métis service members have made to Canada’s military efforts. Thousands of Indigenous people volunteered to serve in both World Wars, the Korean War, and numerous peacekeeping missions, often overcoming systemic barriers and discrimination to do so. Kawartha Lakes encourages residents to take time to acknowledge and honour the service and sacrifices of Indigenous veterans and their families both historically and today.
Councillor Mike Perry, who is Métis, and a past member of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, shared more about Indigenous veterans and their contributions - past and present - in a recent article in The Lindsay Advocate.
