What’s happening at the Somerville Landfill?

Somerville Landfill entrance

Kawartha Lakes – In preparation for future waste disposal at the Somerville landfill, construction on a new landfill cell began on Monday May 5, 2025. The estimated completion date of the project is Friday May 30, 2025.

What does this mean for me?

As we work to expand and improve our Somerville landfill there are a few things residents should be prepared for:

  • Longer than usual wait times
  • Possible increase in odours
  • Construction noises and activity
  • An alternate route to the tipping face

Somerville landfill hours of operation

While construction continues, regular summer hours of operation will still apply. Somerville is open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

Note: the Somerville Landfill will be closed on Friday May 23 for operational needs.

Visiting landfill reminders:

With increased construction traffic, we ask that residents be aware of their surroundings and follow posted rules as well as landfill attendant direction.

For your safety, when visiting landfills always remember to wear proper footwear (certified safety footwear is best), pants, shirts (bulky or loose clothing may become hooked on items), and gloves.

As we continue to focus on efforts to provide safe and convenient disposal options for Kawartha Lakes, we appreciate your patience and understanding throughout the project.

Please do not hesitate to ask staff questions, they are eager and willing to help and it will help you move through the landfill better.
