World MS Day 2025: Helping Canadians get an early, accurate diagnosis
Kawartha Lakes – May 30 is World MS Day, a time when people around the world come together to support those living with multiple sclerosis (MS). This year’s theme is about the importance of getting the right diagnosis early. Many people living with MS face long delays before they get the answers and care they need. Kawartha Lakes is joining the global MS community in calling for faster, more accurate MS diagnoses.
Across the globe, including here in Canada, too many people wait too long to be diagnosed with MS. In fact, 83% of countries report problems with early diagnosis. These delays mean people can’t start treatment soon enough, which can affect their health and quality of life.
“Too many people with MS face delays in diagnosis because of low awareness and limited access to specialists,” said Lydia Makaroff, CEO of the MS International Federation. “This campaign is about shining a light on those challenges and pushing for change.”
Why Early Diagnosis Matters
When MS is caught early, people can start treatment right away. These treatments don’t cure MS, but they can slow down the disease and help manage symptoms. An early diagnosis also gives people time to plan, make informed decisions, and adjust their lifestyles to better live with MS.
Canada and MS
- Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world.
- Over 90,000 Canadians are living with MS.
- 12 Canadians are diagnosed every day.
- MS is not contagious or infectious.
- Women are up to three times more likely to be diagnosed than men.
- Most people diagnosed are between the ages of 20 and 49.
MS affects the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It can cause symptoms like tiredness, trouble walking, numbness, vision problems, and memory or mood changes. Every person’s experience with MS is different.

“MS affects thousands of Canadians, including people right here in Kawartha Lakes. This World MS Day, we’re encouraging everyone to learn more, speak up, and show support. Wearing a digital carnation is a simple act, but it sends a powerful message—we see you, we support you, and we’re with you,” said Doug Elmslie, Mayor of Kawartha Lakes. “Everyone can make a difference in the journey, and Kawartha Lakes is proud to be part of the movement to raise awareness for those living with MS.”
Show Your Support: Join the Digital Carnation Campaign
This World MS Day, you can #TakeActionForMS and help raise awareness by joining the Digital Carnation Pinning Campaign.
The red carnation is a symbol of hope for people with MS. On Friday, May 30, share a digital carnation on your social media to show your support. You can post a selfie with a printable carnation or use a graphic from MS Canada. Be sure to include the hashtag #TakeActionForMS.
