Celebrate Earth Week with simple changes that make a big impact
Kawartha Lakes – Earth Week is here, and it’s time to focus on taking care of the environment and making a difference in our community. This week is a time to start new habits to protect our lakes and rivers, use resources wisely, and reduce waste.
This year’s Earth Week theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” It reminds us that protecting the environment isn’t just about governments, it’s about what we all do every day, whether at school, home, or in our community.
Throughout the week, we’re encouraging you to make simple changes that can have a big impact. This includes reducing waste, using less water, planting trees, and choosing to walk, bike, or carpool when possible.
“Earth Day is a chance to reflect on how we grow as a community while protecting the natural spaces that make our region unique,” said Jenna Stephens, Planning Officer – Environmental Policy at Kawartha Lakes.
Residents can take part by:
- Sorting waste properly and keeping recyclables out of the garbage
- Signing up for paperless billing to reduce paper use and emissions from mail delivery
- Picking up litter in their neighbourhood
- Learning more about local environmental programs and services
“Managing waste responsibly is about more than disposal,” said Heather Dzurko, Manager of Waste Management at Kawartha Lakes. “It’s about reducing what we use, rethinking what we throw away, and protecting our planet for future generations.”
Kawartha Lakes also continues to invest in programs that support sustainability, including waste reduction, climate action planning, and protecting natural spaces.
