Emergency Preparedness Week 2026: Protect your family (and pets) with a few simple steps

Kawartha Lakes – Emergency Preparedness Week is May 3 to 9, and residents are encouraged to take a few simple steps now to get ready for potential emergencies.

In Kawartha Lakes, we’ve seen how quickly things can change, from ice storms and flooding, to power outages and wildfires. Being prepared ahead of time can make a big difference for you and your family.

You don’t need to do everything at once, start with the basics:

Know your risks: Think about what could happen where you live, and how it might affect your home or travel.

Make a plan: Talk with your household about what you would do if you had to leave quickly or stay home without power. Choose a meeting place and make sure everyone knows how to reach each other.

Build a simple emergency kit: Have enough supplies to get by for at least 72 hours. Watch this video from the Government of Canada on how to prepare a family emergency kit.

Don’t forget your pets! Your emergency plan should include your pets too. Set aside food and water, a leash or carrier, medications and records, and a familiar toy or blanket to help keep them calm. Read more about how to keep your furry family members safe and prepared on the Ontario SPCA website.

Stay connected: During an emergency, it’s important to stay informed. Keep an eye on local updates, weather alerts, and emergency notifications. Subscribe to the City of Kawartha Lakes Jump Inbox for updates you can trust, directly from the municipality.

Emergency Preparedness Week reminds us that a little planning now can go a long way later. Even one small step, like starting an emergency kit or having a conversation, can help you feel more confident and ready.
