Fenelon Falls Wastewater System currently overflowing - April 14, 2026
Kawartha Lakes – Beginning at approximately 2:30pm on Tuesday April 14, 2026, an overflow was started at the Fenelon Falls Wastewater System – Colborne St. Sewage Pumping Station, releasing raw effluent into the Fenelon River.
The Fenelon Falls wastewater system is taking in more sewage than usual because of several days of heavy rain. Right now, the system is getting more water than it can handle. To prevent sewage from backing up into homes and causing problems at the treatment plant, some extra water is being released from the system.
Because there has been so much rain, the impact on water quality is expected to be low. However, people who take water from the Fenelon River downstream from the Colborne Street pumping station (below the Fenelon Falls locks) should take precautions.
The Lakelands Public Health Unit advises anyone using water from the river to make sure it is properly filtered and disinfected before drinking. River water can contain germs like bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can make you unwell. This is always important, but extra care should be taken during this time.
If your home or business uses the municipal drinking water system in Fenelon Falls, your water is safe to drink and is not affected.
Another update will be shared when the overflow has ended.
