Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service receives sensory support kits for emergency response

Kawartha Lakes – Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service has received 16 First Responder Sensory Support Kits. These are a generous donation from North City Insurance Brokers, in partnership with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Autism Canada.  

The kits provide firefighters with practical tools to better support people with autism or sensory sensitivities during emergency situations. The resources can help reduce stress and support communication. They can create calmer, more positive interactions between first responders and members of the community.  

On July 17, Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service welcomed Jamie Kovacs, Executive Director of the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council, Jamie McCleary, Executive Director of Autism Canada and Leanna Rea and Christina Rocca of North City Insurance to the Lindsay Fire Station for the presentation of these kits. 

"These kits are another example of what can be accomplished when organizations come together with a shared commitment to community safety," said Jamie Kovacs, Executive Director of the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. "We are grateful to North City Insurance Brokers for helping ensure more fire departments have access to these valuable resources." 

The kits will be placed into service immediately. Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service will purchase additional kits so that each of its 19 fire stations has one available.
