Kawartha Lakes recognizes Big Brothers Big Sisters Month and the power of mentorship

Kawartha Lakes – September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, a time to recognize the important role mentors can play in the lives of children and youth. September 18 also marked Big Brothers Big Sisters Day across Canada.

To celebrate the occasion this year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is encouraging Canadians to “Make Life Bigger,” celebrating how small moments of mentorship can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.

A conversation. Someone who listens. A new experience. A trusted adult who keeps showing up. These moments can help young people build confidence, navigate challenges and see new possibilities for their future.

“Sometimes it’s the smallest moments, a conversation, a shared experience or simply having someone there to listen, that can have the greatest impact on a young person,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “We thank the mentors who continue to show up, build meaningful connections and help young people see what is possible.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters connects young people with trained, caring volunteers through one-to-one and group mentoring programs. Across Canada, 83 local agencies support these relationships, working alongside families, schools and community organizations.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada hopes to reach more than 31,000 young people this year with the support of more than 17,000 mentors.

During Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, residents are encouraged to think about the people who helped shape their own lives and consider how they might do the same for a young person.

There are many ways to support youth mentorship, including becoming a mentor, volunteering, donating or helping raise awareness.

Support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes - Haliburton by joining them for an evening of music and mentorship. On October 4 they will host an Inspirational Concert to help create and sustain one-to-one mentoring relationships for young people in the area. Every ticket and donation supports local youth by connecting them with caring adult mentors who encourage confidence, connection, and growth.
