Placement of Election Signs in Kawartha Lakes

Kawartha Lakes – Today, Thursday August 27, is the first day for placement of election signs on roadsides, in compliance with the Election Sign By-law. As election signs are being placed across Kawartha Lakes, please be advised of the following: 

• Election signs may now be placed on specified public property and roadsides from August 27 to October 31, 2026.

• Election signs had previously been permitted on private property from the date a Candidate filed their Nomination paperwork.

• Election signs have specific setbacks from intersections, sidewalks, shoulders, curbs, and other election signs that are identified in the Election Sign By-law.

• Election signs are not permitted to be affixed on property line fences, official highway signs, traffic signals, or utility poles. 

• No election signs are permitted at or adjacent to public parks, municipal trails, or on property with municipal facilities (such as municipal offices, schools and fire or police stations).

• Only two election signs are permitted on any one piece of land zoned residential, and no more than three signs on properties zoned other than residential.

• Councillor and School Board Trustee candidates may only place signs within the boundaries of the ward(s) of the office they are running for, and be aware that signs placed on property that is owned by another municipality must comply with their regulations.

• Candidates who are eligible to place signs on curb-separated median islands (such as along Victoria Avenue, Lindsay) should follow the specific sign rules for these locations (such as only one sign per candidate per block, distance from intersections and other signs, etc.).

• Signs placed alongside Highways 7, 7A, 35, and 115 must comply with the Ministry of Transportation election sign regulations. 

• Complaints about potential violations of the sign by-law may be directed to the candidate’s campaign, or to Municipal Law Enforcement should the campaign not take action. 

• Signs removed by City staff for violations of the by-law will be held at a local Public Works Depot, until claimed by the candidate. Signs not collected by the candidate may be subject to a $20 fee per election sign.

• Vandalism, theft, or other criminal activity involving election signs should be reported to the non-emergency line of the appropriate police authority.

• Signs supporting or opposing a candidate (not placed by a official candidate’s campaign) may only be placed by a registered third party who has registered at the City Clerk’s Office.
