Remembrance Day Commemorations in Kawartha Lakes - 2026

Kawartha Lakes – On November 8 and 11, we honour the veterans who have served our country. On Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, communities across Kawartha Lakes will come together to honour the courage, service and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve our country.

Everyone is encouraged to attend a local ceremony, wear a poppy, and take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by all Canadian veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

“The freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today came at a great cost,” said Mayor Doug Elmslie. “On Remembrance Day, we honour the generations of Canadians who answered the call to serve, those who never returned home and those who continue to serve our country today. Their courage and sacrifice deserve our gratitude, not just on November 11, but every day.”

Canadians recognize Indigenous Veterans Day to honour the important contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people who served in Canada's military, contributions that have long been left out of Canada’s history.

“It’s important that we remember the Indigenous men and women who have answered the call to serve in every major conflict, including the War of 1812,” said Ward 3 Councillor Mike Perry. “Too many came home to a country that didn’t honour that service. I invite everyone in Kawartha Lakes to pause, learn their stories, and respect their service and sacrifice  shoulder to shoulder with all members who’ve served and are currently serving. We will remember them.” Councillor Perry is Métis and a past member of the Canadian Army Reserves (Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment).

Indigenous veterans have played important roles in Canada's military history, serving, fighting, dying, and recovering alongside their fellow Canadian Armed Forces comrades. They have served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and on international peacekeeping missions. To learn more, visit Toronto’s Indigenous Veterans Day page.

Kawartha Lakes encourages everyone to take time to learn about and acknowledge the contributions of all veterans to honour their service and sacrifices. Attend a  Remembrance Day ceremony to honour our veterans, and wear a poppy as a sign of remembrance.
