Springing Forward into May

Welcome to May! It is wonderful to see the flowers finally starting to bloom around the grounds here at Victoria Manor. With the warmer weather arriving in the City of Kawartha Lakes, there is a renewed energy in the air.

April was an exceptionally busy month for our home. We recently hosted two representatives from the Ministry of Long-Term Care for a Proactive Compliance Inspection (PCI), which lasted two and a half weeks. You may have seen the inspectors around our hallways, and I want to thank everyone—residents, families, and staff—for the warm hospitality shown to them.

I thought it might be interesting to share just how much goes into keeping a home like ours running safely and successfully. To put things in perspective, we operate within a many legislative frameworks, the primary one is called the Fixing Long-Term Care Act (FLTCA). Together, these contain 539 individual sections that govern everything from our nursing care, housekeeping, maintenance and meals to our laundry and activity programs.

On top of that, we are also accountable to several other important pieces of legislation:

•    AODA: Making sure our home is accessible for everyone.
•    OFC: Keeping us safe through the Ontario Fire Code.
•    OHSA: Ensuring a safe workplace for our dedicated staff.
•    PHIPA: Protecting your personal health information and privacy.
•    HCRA: Guiding how we manage health care consent.

When you add it all up, our team manages over 2,000 specific points of accountability every single day! It is common during any inspection for a few small items to be identified for improvement. During this inspection, I am pleased to say that of the 7 identified items, nothing was related to resident care, staffing, safety or dietary. Even these items are minor and work is being completed to address the findings. When you consider those 2,000 moving parts, it really highlights the incredible amount of work our team gets right every day.

I am so proud of how our employees manage these complexities while keeping their focus exactly where it belongs: on the happiness and safety of our residents. Thank you to this amazing community for your continued support as we head into a beautiful May.

Warmly,
Kyle Cotton, Administrator

Together, we can make Victoria Manor a place everyone is proud to call home.

A Family Council is a group made up of family and friends of individuals living in a long-term or continuing care community that acts as a collective voice for the wellbeing, care, and best quality of life for the people living here. As a self-led, self-determining, democratic group, Family Councils can provide advocacy, communication, and collaboration to create a better home for all.

We are pleased to share the attached resource from Family Councils Ontario to support family members who are interested in learning more about what a Family Council can do.
