Fire Prevention Week 2026: Safe Charging is a Superpower
Fire Prevention Week is October 4 to 10, 2026. This year's campaign, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” focuses on lithium-ion battery safety and the importance of safe charging habits.
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes and other household products. While convenient, these batteries can pose a fire risk if they are damaged, improperly used or charged unsafely.
Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service encourages everyone to take these three steps to help prevent lithium-ion battery fires:
Buy safely
When purchasing products that use lithium-ion batteries, look for a recognized safety certification mark, such as CSA, UL or ETL. These marks indicate that the product has been tested to applicable safety standards.
Always use batteries and chargers that are approved for your specific device.
Charge safely
Safe charging habits can help prevent fires. Follow these important precautions:
- Always charge on a hard, flat surface, away from anything that can burn.
- Never charge devices on beds, couches or under pillows.
- Use the charger supplied with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Never leave batteries charging unattended or while you are away from home.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
- Keep charging areas clear of combustible materials and ensure exits and escape routes remain unobstructed.
- Stop using batteries that are swollen, leaking, discoloured, unusually hot or have an unusual smell.
Recycle responsibly
Never put lithium-ion batteries in the garbage or regular recycling bins. They can be damaged during collection and processing, creating a fire risk for waste collection personnel, facilities and vehicles.
Take used batteries and battery-powered devices to an appropriate battery recycling location – cover terminals with tape and take them to a household hazardous waste depot, either Lindsay (51 Wilson Road) or Fenelon Landfill (341 Mark Road, Cameron).
Remember: Safe charging is a superpower. Small changes to your charging habits can help prevent fires and keep your home and family safe.
